Mitchelstown Rugby Club

Munster Junior league Div 3

12.01.2020

Waterford City 22 Mitchelstown 29

Following the heroic efforts in the Munster Junior Cup in Cork, the Juniors continued on their winning league form and were by far the better team on the day.

The day was bitterly cold, and the sunshine, although welcome, created problems for anyone hoping to catch a high ball.

The first try of the game was the scored by Pa Magee when he scythed through the defence to open the scoring, converting himself. A bonus point win was badly needed, and the early exchanges were not exactly encouraging. Our second score came from the ubiquitous Josh Evans, who must by now on a club record for tries scored in a season.

Owen Burke scored from the base of a very well controlled scrum from close in.

In the second half, the lads played some of their best rugby of the season. Another try from a maul saw Owen Burke double his tally, and Pa Magee scored his third conversion, to add to his second half penalty. The home side had little to offer other than two consolation tries created by quick penalties from their agile scrim half.

Another bonus point secured. The next round of the Munster Junior Cup is on Sunday 26th January, with Cashel the visitors in a game which will test the mettle of ‘town, but they will be ready!!

Under 14 league rugby

On Saturday last we welcomed Sunday’s Well to Currabowen for a game in what the purists would have called true rugby weather. The rain made handling the ball a real challenge but credit to both teams for keeping handling errors to the absolute minimum. The first 15 mins consisted of relentless phase after phase by our boys who showed considerable control to retain possession during this period. An error deep in our 22 resulted in a try somewhat against the run of play for Well however within 2 mins that error was atoned for when Conor Dooling pounced on a loose ball with his boot on the halfway line, another clever kick through saw him win the foot race with the Well defender to touch down. For the rest of the half we had them on the ropes several times and were very unlucky not to score again before half time. The second half saw us come out on the unlucky side of a number of pieces of play but the work rate continued with some resolute defending including balls held up on the line and turnovers won. Despite missing a number of players this was a very positive outing with a large number of players stepping up in the absence of others. This young team are learning on their feet and this performance of the season so far came about from every player contributing hugely to the overall performance. Well done to all and we look forward to our next game away to Fermoy on 25th Jan.

The team lined out as follows: Ben Cotter, James Keane, Darragh Casey, Jack O’Brien, Josh Kearney, Sean Gorry, Jack Kelly, Eoghan Kelly, Andrew McEnaney, Stephen Flynn, Conor Dooling, Dylan Spillane, Aidan Birmingham-Doran
