Munster Junior League – Section B

Carrick-on-Suir 13   Galbally-Mitchelstown 18

After a seven week break due to postponements and the Christmas period Galbally-Mitchelstown were back in action in the Munster Junior League on Sunday in Carrick-on-Suir. We got off to an excellent start when after only a couple of minutes on the clock, a well worked lineout move saw Brendan Childs go over in the corner for the opening try. A few minutes later after great link play between the backs and forwards, we won a penalty in front of the posts, John Kearns duly obliged from the tee to add a further 3 points to the lead. For the rest of the half through ill-discipline and some rustiness due to the long break, Carrick took over the scoring for the rest of the half and with a converted try and penalty went to the break leading 10-8.

We came out a different team after the break and our pack started dominating proceedings, after a number of strong carries and some good handling skills, Frank Cussen touched down under the posts, John Kearns added the conversion. John Kearns added a further 3 points from the tee shortly after. Carrick responded with 3 points of their own but with a strong defensive performance in the last quarter, we saw the game out to win by 5 points.

Munster Under 16 bowl competition

On Saturday last we hosted Clanwilliam of Tipperary town at home in Currabowen in the 4th round of the Munster Bowl. Clan started off very brightly and with the aid of a wind had us pinned deep in our own half for the opening 10 minutes during which we defended in a very organised manner. We gradually found a way to move them back up in the field and dominated both field position and possession for the next 20 minutes. A barreling run from our hooker Aidan O’Mahony took us into their 22 and when a strong drive by winger Eoin Lynch was held up short of the line in the left corner we recycled and immediately attacked the opposite side after some impressive handling with quick hands. The result of this was right winger Liam O’Donnell retaining possession and subsequentially Jack Kearney crossed the line after a typical Jack Kearney run. Almost immediately from the restart kick off Cian O’Donnell put in a powerful hit on their No 8, a couple of disrupted passes later Darragh Casey read a fantastic intercept to run under the posts from the halfway line, this brought us into half time 14-0 up. The second half continued in the same vein, Clan picked off an intercept try but we knuckled down and were rewarded with a second Jack Kearney try in a very similar manner to his first. This was a real standout performance where every single player stood up and was counted, relentless work rate was matched with no shortage of skill and nous to forge a very pleasing and memorable win against one of the most established clubs in the country in a final score of 19-07.

Our next game is at home to Nenagh on the weekend of 04th Feb. Team from; Carlos O’Grady, Liam O’Donnell, Dan Tuohy, Eoin Lynch, Darragh Casey, Oden van der Werff, Cian O’Donnell, Lorcan Murray, Gearoid Desmond, Jayden Lynch, Aidan O’Mahony, Sean Gorry, Eoghan Kelly, Jack Kelly, Jack Kearney, Will Murphy, Ben Cooke.
