Mitchelstown Rugby Club

Junior 1 Division 3 league

Our junior team started last Sunday, with a game against Douglas/Carrigaline scheduled for Moneygourney, but actually played in Mahon, as the new pitch is not yet completed. A blustery day did not help either side, but tries from Pa Norris, Sean Molloy, Chris Noonan, Tom O’Callaghan, Sean Myers and Morgan Fox were enough to vanquish a home side that faded in the face of a strong wind in the second half, and gain the winning bonus point. Best wishes to Killian Dold for a speedy recovery from his injury.

Next week we face a tough Bantry side who also had a bonus point win last weekend, and will not make life easy for our side in their first home game.

LOTTO - € 16,800 LOTTO next Sunday week

No lottery winner last Sunday in The Ramble Inn, where we concluded the draw. The numbers drawn were 12, 15, 19, and 20. There was no jackpot winner.

Many thanks to all the staff of Careys for facilitating last week’s draw, and for the sustaining coffee. Lucky dip winners: Boggsy - €50, Eilie Rea - €50, Pam Fanning - €25, Bertie Meade - €25

The next draw will be Sunday, 14th October, in The Firgrove Hotel, which is famous for its great Thursday night jiving sessions, selection of food, fast service, and exquisite desserts.

The new jackpot will be €16,800 for a single winner, the highest it has ever been, or shared if more than one winner.

Entry is only €2 per pick of 4 numbers or 3 tickets for €5.

Remember, the odds of getting 4 numbers in our lottery is very close to the same as getting 4 numbers in the national lottery, but our prize is far bigger, over 250 times bigger in fact.

Annual tickets are available at €50 for 26 draws, with a bonus draw only for annuals. Contact Owen on 087-8112991 for annual tickets, or any other committee member. Rugby Club Lotto is now also available to play on line at www.mitchelstownrugby.com

Friendly Match

Fethard 21 Mitchelstown 50

The Mitchelstown under 14's kicked off their season on Sunday with a challenge match away to Fethard. Mitchelstown and Fethard were both a little under strength.

Mitchelstown started well and Leon Fitzharris opened the scoring with a trademark breakaway run. Tommy Long added the conversion and scored a try himself before adding another conversion. Fethard regrouped and scored two converted tries. Mitchelstown added a third try to settle the nerves before halftime and went in at the breakdown leading by 19 points to 14.

Fethard came out well motivated for the second half but it was Mitchelstown who drew first blood with a try from Tommy Long unluckily hitting the post with his conversion. Fethard went straight down the pitch and scored a converted try themselves to keep the pressure up. Jack McGrath made an appearance for the second half after playing a match earlier, county trialing with Tipperary, and duly scored a try. By this stage Mitchelstown were beginning to find more space around the field and the depleted Fethard squad were beginning to show their relative inexperience. Mitchelstown cut loose after this with Leon Fitzharris in sparkling form. ’Town ran out with a well-deserved win, 50 to 21 point. There will be sterner tests ahead but an excellent start to season.
