Mitchelstown Rugby Club

Junior 1 Division 3 league

Mitchelstown 27 Bantry Bay 20

Given the results that both sides got in their first league outings, it was no surprise that a single score was the margin at full time. A strong wind greeted the warriors as they took the field on Sunday, with the away team using the advantage in the first period. The turf was in excellent condition, a testimony to the efforts of Harry Kinsella and was marked to perfection.

The visitors used the elements to their advantage, and minor indiscretions saw two penalties kicked well, one from half way, and a six point lead after ten minutes. That was to be their last score of the half, and after 18 minutes, excellent pack work allowed space for Euan Dunne to cross for a try. This was converted by Tom O’Callaghan, who added a further 3 points from a penalty. This left the margin at 4 points, 10-6 to Mitchelstown at the interval.

Bantry were first into their stride after the restart, winning a scrum, and scoring a try which was duly converted. The home pack started to dominate, and sharp work resulted in a try by James Hennessy, with Tom O’Callaghan adding the extra after 50 minutes. A further home penalty seemed to stretch the advantage beyond the Bantry boys, but with 12 minutes to go, the sides were level. In a nail biting finish, quality work by the entire team resulted in David Sheehan crossing for a fine try with the usual conversion by Tom. This turned out to be the last play, and the result leaves ‘town joint top with Tralee. There is a break next weekend, with a long trip to Killorglin the Sunday after.

Minis on tour

Our mini players joined Fermoy and Cork Constitution for a series of games last weekend.

Our under 8 side drew both their games – well done!

Our under 9 team beat Cork Con 12 -2 – very well done indeed!

Despite being short several players, the under 11’s drew with Fermoy, and lost to a very strong Cork Con team. A great day all round.

LOTTO - € 16,800 LOTTO next Sunday.

No lottery winner last Sunday in The Ramble Inn, where we concluded the draw. The numbers drawn were 12, 15, 19, and 20. There was no jackpot winner.

Many thanks to all the staff of Careys for facilitating last week’s draw, and for the sustaining coffee. Lucky dip winners: Boggsie - €50, Eilie Rea - €50, Pam Fanning - €25, Bertie Meade - €25

The next draw will be Sunday, 14th October in The Firgrove Hotel, which is famous for its great Thursday night jiving sessions, selection of food, fast service and exquisite desserts.

The new jackpot will be €16,800 for a single winner, the highest it has ever been, or shared if more than one winner.

Entry is only €2 per pick of 4 numbers or 3 tickets for €5.

Remember, the odds of getting 4 numbers in our lottery is very close to the same as getting 4 numbers in the national lottery, but our prize is far bigger, over 250 times bigger in fact.
