Mitchelstown Rugby Club

Junior 1 Division 3 league

No fixture last Sunday, which was fortunate, as many were distracted by stags, hens, and other forms of wildlife over the bank holiday weekend. The league campaign resumes with a home fixture against Dungarvan on Sunday, kicking off at 2.30 pm.

Admission is free to all, so come and enjoy the spectacle.

Girls Rugby Under 16

Training this week will be in Currabowen at 8pm Wednesday evening. Please be ready to go on the field, remember your gum shields. Despite there being a full fixture list, no other team seems to be capable of lining out at present, so we must wait for our first opponents.

Boys Rugby Under 14

Mitchelstown 5 Midleton 24

On Saturday morning our Under 14's faced a tough fixture, playing a strong Midleton side at home in Currabowen. The team was as follows: Sam McGrath, Cormac Luddy, Tommy Long, Conor Wiley, Leon Fitzharris, Aaron Hickey, Jack O'Grady, Declan Moriarty, Stephen Flynn, Brendan O'Donoghue (Capt.), Andrew McEnerney, Josh Kearney, Conor Walsh, Jack O'Brien, Robbie O'Sullivan.

Mitchelstown kicked off the match and got a sense of the challenge to come as Midleton’s much larger ball carriers ran the ball very hard at the town defence for much of the match. Our lads, despite being smaller proved that technique in the tackle would bring down the big lads all the same. Midleton controlled possession through their phase play which was especially strong at the breakdown. However, with Brendan and Declan constantly looking for a turnover Mitchelstown would take advantage with counter attacks from deep with Tommy and Leon finding space to run. Leon was very unlucky not to score a try from his own half to be tackled only five metres short.

The pressure from the big Midleton pack helped them to get a 12-0 advantage come half-time, but our lads can be proud of the fact they were going up against a much stronger and bigger team.

Determined to get on the scoreboard in the 2nd half Mitchelstown pressurised their opponents through a disciplined defensive 10 minutes period to start the half. Midleton made mistakes and lost their advantage at the breakdown giving away a string of penalties, playing directly into one of our lad’s best strengths, the pick and go. Through carries from Aaron, Declan and Tommy, who broke the first tackle to score a great try, was just reward for Mitchelstown. Unfortunately for Mitchelstown, the tough defensive display throughout the match led to tired legs and Midleton would take advantage and closed out the game with two tries at the death.

The final score was 24-5, a disappointing result but the lads can be proud of the fact that they went toe to toe with a much bigger team and only for a few scores that went Midleton’s way the result could have been different. We would like to thank the parents for the after-match refreshments, Harry for all his work on the morning. I would also like to say congratulations to Andy O’Mahony who made his sideline debut. We will be training as normal on Thursday at 7:30pm at Currabowen. All our coaches contact details are available. Our under 14’s train every Thursday at 7:30pm at Currabowen.
