Mitchelstown Rugby Club – Four out of four ain’t bad!
Junior 1 Division 3 league
The league campaign resumed with a home fixture against Dungarvan on Sunday last, kicking off at 2.30 pm. The game started in dry conditions with Dungarvan facing the Glanworth end from the start. A mere nine minutes had passed when Mitchelstown comfortably won their own lineout, and following a fine rolling maul, crossed the line with Patrick Norris grounding the ball. The conversion attempt failed from far out on the right. Dungarvan hit back on thirteen minutes and twenty minutes with two well struck penalties following off side decisions. Worse was to come when following alternate knock-ons, the visitors were permitted to continue and score a try, which was converted. This left the half time score at 5-13 in favour of the Waterford men.
The rain started to fall in the second period, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the ‘town crowd, who roared their warriors into battle. They were soon rewarded with a penalty goal from Tom O’Callaghan, to cut the deficit six minutes into the half. A great session of possession play was to follow, and after sixteen minutes, David Sheehan broke the defence and crashed over in the corner. Tom duly converted, and then added a penalty to give the boys a five point cushion going into the last quarter. Dungarvan did themselves no favours by earning a sin bin decision for persistent high tackling. Following a lineout, they allowed the ball to emerge from a ruck in their in-goal area, and either the wily Morgan Fox, or the acutely aware Brian O’Donoghue touched down for what was to be the final score.
The result leaves Mitchelstown one point behind leaders Tralee at the top of the table, and three points ahead of Killarney, all three sides having played four games.
Our next outing is to Scariff in county Clare in on 18th November, Sunday week.
