Mitchelstown Rugby Club – Busy week all round!

Junior 1 Division 3 – Back on Top.

The league campaign resumed with an away fixture against Scarrif on Sunday last, kicking off at 2.30 pm. The game started in perfect conditions with the exception of a strong winter sun glaring at Mitchelstown in the first half. From the kick-off Mitchelstown looked up for the challenge of the Clare side. Mitchelstown would take the lead after a strong march up the pitch ending with a Tom O’Callaghan penalty in front of the posts. Mitchelstown would extend their lead further in the next 10 minutes with another close range penalty. Neither side would score again before half time, with Scarrif knocking on close to the try line before the break.

With the sun at their backs Mitchelstown would come fast out of the blocks in the second half with Pa Molloy going over for the games first try. Leading 11-0, Scarrif players became more and more frustrated with tensions boiling over at points throughout the half as the visitors piled more pressure on the hosts. With 20 minutes to go, Mitchelstown would further increase their lead with John Landers touching down. Scarrif would finally get some momentum through some 50-50 penalty calls. Mitchelstown would hold on to seal a 16-0 victory, not an easy result to get on the road.

The result leaves Mitchelstown 2 points ahead at the top of the league from Tralee, who had lost away to Dungarvan. Mitchelstown are now the only unbeaten side in the league. Our next outing will be a home fixture against Tralee on Sunday the 2nd of December at 2:30pm.

Boys Rugby Under 14 – South Munster Conference C

The Local Rivals.

On Thursday last week our under 14 boys would play under lights away to local rivals Fermoy at 7:30pm. The team was a s follows: Jack (Capt.)and Sam McGrath, Cormac Luddy, Tommy Long, Conor Wiley, Leon Fitzharris, Aaron Hickey, Jack O'Grady, Declan Moriarty, Stephen Flynn, Brendan O'Donoghue, Andrew McEnerney, Josh Kearney, Conor Dooling, Jack O'Brien, Robbie O'Sullivan, Eoin Geary, Killian Atkins, Billy Finn and Diarmuid O’Brien.

Mitchelstown would make the much better start to the game, through some fierce tackling and strong ball carrying. Fermoy would have their hands full trying to contain Leon, Sam and Tommy early on in the first half who each would test the limits of the their defence with some great running. Mitchelstown made these runs count with Leon going over for the games first score, a superb try. The home team would finally get on the scoreboard after some sustained pressure scoring in the corner bringing the scores level once more. Both teams were ferocious in defence with some great tackling and ball retention on display. The half would come to a close with Tommy extending his streak of having scored a try in every game played so far this season, so going into the break Mitchelstown would lead 10-5.

Credit to both teams on the night the great play from the first half would continue from the off in the second. Mitchelstown’s shown some much improved passing, with special mention to Diarmuid O’Brien who was playing his first game of the season and first on the big pitch, put in an excellent display at first centre with his passing allowing Leon and Sam the opportunities to stretch their legs. After much back and forth Fermoy would score a try to tie the game with 10 minutes to play. Mitchelstown would try desperately in this period to score, going agonisingly close through Tommy who was under the posts for his second try only for it to be called back for a penalty infringement against Mitchelstown. The game would end in a draw and both teams would come away with points after a brilliant game.

We will be training as normal on Thursday at 7:30pm at Currabowen. Our next outing will be this Saturday the 24th at home to league leaders Cobh Pirates at 11am; all support would be greatly appreciated.

Mini Rugby – CBS Field

The Mini Knights battle the Mini Pirates

The U11’s played there second away match of the season last weekend against Cobh Pirates. There was a fantastic turn out for the game with nearly a full squad travelling on the day. Cobh fielded a strong team and opened the game with 2 early tries. Mitchelstown soon settled and put on a fantastic technical display against a physically stronger side soon levelling the score with very well executed tries. The game was evenly matched throughout and both teams finished looking forward to the return match in January.

The under 9s were also in action against Cobh. Cobh had a very strong team and it was physically tough from the start. This was our 9’s second match this season and you can see the development from their first fixture, especially their teamwork. It was a joy to watch the boys bringing their individual skillsets into the team concept, throughout the match they worked for each other showing some superb passing, tackling and rucking. They can't wait for their next match!

Our under 8s turned out in great numbers for the trip to Cobh. They have been training very well of late and we're really looking forward to the game. The lads took a bit to warm up with the tackling but their rucking was fantastic which meant we had plenty possession. We scored two great tries in the first game and lost out to a couple of breakaway tries.

They had well warmed up by the second game. The tackling and defending in general was absolutely fantastic. Every player played their part and we scored some great tries to come out on top.

This was a great experience and opportunity for the lads to put their training into to practice. They are all on their full season of rugby and they have great potential.

Thank you to all the parents who made sure they were there on the day and for their support in Cobh.

Squad on the day: Cathal Meade, John and Cathal Cleary, Harry Finn, Anthony O'Flynn, Liam Drake, Keelan Kearney, Oran Kearney, Josh Keane, Ryan Kinsella, Noah Bernard.

Our Mini’s next fixtures will be this Saturday away to North Cork rivals Charleville. Let’s hope the weather is good and all involved have a great morning.

All mini rugby from 5 -11 years of age now takes place on Sunday mornings at 11. 00 Am., by kind permission of the CBS School. All are assured of a warm welcome, and fun is the order of the day. Throughout the year there will be blitz tournaments and other interesting days to enjoy, and many opportunities for parents to get involved, but only if they want to!
