Match Report: Fermoy Vs. Mitchelstown U14’s 06-01-19

On a beautiful morning after the Christmas break, our Under 14’s made the short trip last Sunday to Fermoy RFC for the first round of the South Munster under 14 Bowl League. Everyone in attendance was excited to the match underway.

The Mitchelstown squad on the day was as follows: Sam McGrath, Aaron Hickey, Tommy Long, Stephen Flynn, Brendan O’Donoghue, Conor Dooling, Conor Wiley, Josh Kearney, Declan Moriarty, Jack O’Grady, Andrew Dowling, Leon Fitzharris, Cormac and James Luddy, Diarmuid O’Brien, Robbie O’Sullivan, Billy Finn and Conor Walsh.

The first match after the Christmas break was always going to be tough and both teams showed some serious rustiness. The first 15 mins of the match passed with both teams trying to get up to speed, with both teams making a few breaks. One break in particular by the Fermoy Number 8 looked a certain try only for a great tackle by Conor Wiley. Fermoy ended the half with 3 quick-fire tries much to the disappointment of the town lads as they had not played their best rugby so far.

Mitchelstown started start the 2nd half brightly only to get caught out from a quick Fermoy counter attack to leave the score 22-0. The lads were determined to get back into the game and did so through Tommy Long who had been threatening the Fermoy defence all day finally broke loose down the blindside to score our first try of 2019 and added the conversion. The breaks that Fermoy had been making throughout the first half were now being stopped by some superb tackling by Brendan and Josh. The match would end on a high for Mitchelstown with a great try from Leon after some smooth passing to get the ball wide quickly. The match ended with the score 22-12 in favour of Fermoy, not the result we wanted but a good game to start the New Year.

The support from the parents was brilliant as it was all last year and of course all our players who played brilliantly in the match. Our next league game will be away to Skibbereen on Saturday 19th of January. If you have any queries or an interest in joining the team, please visit our website www.Mitchelstownrugby.com all our coaches contact details are available. Our under 14’s train every Wednesday at 7pm at Currabown.
