The Boneyard Bulletin 15.01.19 The Run Continues

Mitchelstown Rugby Club – The run continues

Junior 1 Division 3 league

Mitchelstown 19 Ennis 18

The league campaign continued with a fine win in Currabowen, with the result in the balance until the final whistle, leaving the boys in second place in the table behind Tralee. Killarney having lost at Dungarvan, dropped a place.

It was a bleak, windy, and wet day with the breeze blowing into the dressing room corner. Ennis came with all guns blazing, and by the first quarter had a two try, thirteen point margin, with no conversion kicked. We had to wait for the dying embers of the half to see Sean Myers cross for the first home score. So, an uphill climb was the order of the day for the second period.

The boys did not disappoint, and a superb break by Euan Dunne for a try after 15 minutes reduced the deficit to a single point when expertly converted by Patrick Magee. Ennis rallied bravely and another unconverted try gave them a margin of six points. A controversial “forward pass” thwarted what was the best attacking play of the game by Mitchelstown, but it was left to Owen Burke to finish off the scoring with another try which made the score 18-17 to Ennis. Patrick Magee did not flinch under the pressure, and slotted home the conversion to rapturous applause. We were joined in Jackie O’Brien’s by many of the Ennis team who really appreciated the fine buffet and soup on offer, and were astonished by the special offer for matchday pints.

The next league game is away to Corca Dhuibhne at 2.30 pm on Sunday, where a good result will come close to ensuring a play-off spot.
