Boys Rugby Under 14

On the 19th of January, the U14 Mitchelstown rugby Team played a tough and relentless match against Skibbereen RFC. At the start Skibb got over with a lucky break and just getting in with the try. 10 mins or so later, after a number of hard tackles had been put in by Declan Moriarty, Tommy Long, Cormac Luddy, Sam McGrath, and Aaron Hickey. Leon Fitzharris made a break but was hauled down right in front of the line, but because of great support by Brendan O’Donoghue who rucked over, he stopped the Skibbereen Full Back from stealing the ball. Then James Luddy threw a great pass t Tommy Long who was running a hard line and went over for the try. After the try the match was extremely tight, with grueling tackles and skillful kicks done by Diarmuid O’Brien, James Luddy and Sam McGrath. Overall it was a very tight first half with a tight shift put in by the Team. The second half was just as exciting, with great breaks being made by Jack O’Grady, and with great catches whilst under pressure from Conor Wiley. Then Skibb made a break, but a brilliant ankle tap by Tommy Long stopped him in his tracks, suddenly Mitchelstown were on the counter attack. With quick thinking and determination, they made their way to the 22 metre line where Leon Fitzharris broke a tackle and went over for the try. After the try it was converted by Sam McGrath, over the black spot. For the rest of the match there was some great tough carries by Josh Kearney, in the face of bigger opponents, and excellent rucking by Stephen Flynn and Jack O’Brien. However, Skibbereen pulled away, due to their physical advantage scoring tries from lucky breaks and some good set pieces. Overall it was a very good game, with plenty of excitement and a hard work ethic by the Mitchelstown side to go up against such a physical side like Skibbereen.
