Mitchelstown Rugby Club – The run continues

Junior 1 Division 3 league – final round

Mitchelstown 14 Killarney 13

The league campaign continued with a fine win in Currabowen, with the result in the balance until the final whistle, leaving the boys in second place in the table behind Tralee, who will take the automatic promotion spot. Dungarvan will more than likely fill the first playoff place, leaving another close encounter in Currabowen with Killarney the visitors.

It was a bleak, windy, and wet day with the breeze blowing into the dressing room corner. The crowd were well wrapped up, but the chilling showers were almost enough to dull the senses. The first period was a turgid affair, with the visitors having the benefit of the stiff breeze, but accurate kicking from hand or tee was difficult. The net result was a penalty to each side being the only notes in the referee’s notebook.

The Kerry men took the game to us in the second half, and consecutive drives resulted in a try early in the half. The home side did not panic, however, and a Magee penalty and a try from the back of an excellent maul, executed by the guile and pace of Josh Evans, saw ‘town back in the lead by a point. Killarney were not finished, though and went ahead with six minutes to go. Defeat was staring us in the face, and the prospect of going to Dungarvan for a semi-final was looming large.

The boys did not disappoint, and worked themselves back into a scoring position. A penalty was awarded, Patrick Magee did not flinch under the pressure, and slotted home the winning penalty to rapturous applause with barely a minute to go. We were joined in Jackie O’Brien’s by many of the Killarney team who really appreciated the fine buffet and soup on offer, and were astonished by the special offer for match day pints. Thanks to all the staff and proprietors for their usual attention to detail, and pleasant service.

Boys Rugby Under 14

Only training last Saturday at Currabowen, but there was a great turnout under the tutelage of Leonard, Sean and Andy. Clonakilty are on the schedule for the weekend, so good luck lads.

Rugby Under 10

Ruth and the gang continued with winning ways, accounting for a good Youghal side by 12-6.

Rugby Under 8

Fermoy came to play in Currabowen, and we fielded two teams against them. The lads played great defensive rugby, and also showed huge improvement in attack.

Thanks to all the team, coaches Louise and Des, and parents who looked after all the catering, and tied bootlaces, and wiped grazes.
