Junior 1 Division 3 league – Promotion playoff games.
The final round of games threw up the results we expected, and we should be meeting Killarney in Currabowen again for a place in the final. Dungarvan will be hosting Ennis in the second semi-final.
The dates are not yet fixed, so watch this space.
Girls Rugby Under 16
Training this week will be in Currabowen at 8pm Wednesday evening. Please be ready to go on the field, remember your gum shields.
Mitchelstown vs. Clonakilty under 14s Match Report 16/2/2019
For the penultimate match of our league campaign we welcomed league leaders Clonankilty to Currabowen last Saturday. The Mitchelstown squad on the day was as follows: Jack McGrath (Capt.) and Sam McGrath, Cormac and James Luddy, Tommy Long, Leon Fitzharris, Declan Moriarty, Aaron Hickey, Jack O’Brien, Killian Atkins, Jack O’Grady, Andrew McEnerney, Brendan O’Donoghue, Josh Kearney, Robbie O’Sullivan, Conor Wiley, Conor Dooling, Billy White, Stephen O’Flynn.
In the weeks since our last outing, the work rate and commitment in training really showed in the first 10 mins of the match. Our lads were matching the much bigger Clonakilty across the board, sticking to the game plan and giving Clonakilty the shock of their lives. The tackling from both teams was ferocious and for those on the side line were being treated to a great exhibition of youth rugby. The deadlock was broken by the visitors scoring the first try of the game, but like anything else they got on the day Clonakilty had to work extremely hard to break down the lightning quick and aggressive Mitchelstown defence lead by Captain Jack McGrath, starting his first game since 2018 after injury. With the score 5 – 0 in favour of the visitors, the game resumed with both teams evenly matched. Clon extended their lead to 10-0 through with their winger going over in the corner.
From the restart a mistake by Clon led to a scrum for Mitchelstown on the Clon 5 metre line. Mitchelstown got their deserved reward their play in the first half, with Declan Moriarty powering over the line. The half ended with Mitchelstown on the front foot and hoping to bring that momentum into the second half.
To delight of everyone in attendance the second period started with the same great rugby being played by both teams. Mitchelstown were looking the more dangerous side going forward especially with Tommy Long playing at 13 having the space to operate and make the runs he is now famous for. Tommy made Clon pay for giving him the space to move with a brilliant run from the middle to the pitch to score under the posts. He also converted his try to give Town a 12-10 lead. The match continued to go back and forward between the teams until Clon scored two quick-fire tries to lead 22-12. Mitchelstown controlled the rest of the match as the forwards who were brilliant all game stopped the much larger Clon pack from getting any foothold in the later stages of the game, while our backs tried everything to get the next score, going close first through Leon showing some “FitzMagic” with some great counterattacking play from fullback and Sam McGrath being held inches from the try line.
Unfortunately for Town the final whistle would go with the final score staying 22-12 to Clon. Very proud of the lads as they performed brilliantly and hopefully we can bring this kind of performance into our final league game against Charleville. Both teams and their supporters were treated to Tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes after the match provided by our ever-present and brilliant group of parents. Thanks to everyone who attended the match and Clonakilty for travelling on the day.

Rugby Under 10
Ruth and the gang continued with winning ways, accounting for a good Youghal side by 12-6.
Rugby Under 8
Fermoy came to play in Currabowen, and we fielded two teams against them. The lads played great defensive rugby, and also showed huge improvement in attack.
Thanks to all the team, coaches Louise and Des, and parents who looked after all the catering, and tied bootlaces, and wiped grazes.
