The Boneyard Bulletin 27.04.19 End of Season

Mitchelstown Rugby Club – The season’s end

Junior 1 League Division 3

The junior side acquitted themselves well, only losing to the eventual straight winners Tralee, and failing narrowly in the playoffs to beat a rugged Killarney side in a tough encounter. We will look forward to the new season with hope.

We finished up the season on Saturday with a very successful fun day and medal presentation. Coach Marie thanked all the players for their commitment and great games over the season. She also thanked the parents, the club committee and everyone who helped out at training, who were fantastic support over the season.

The medals were then presented, and also trophies to player of the year Oran Kearney, Captain/Leader Noah Bernard and Best Try Ryan Kinsella.

Match Report: Mitchelstown Vs. Cobh U14’s 13-04-19

Last Saturday our under 14’s welcoming league Winners Cobh Pirates to Currabowen for the semi-final of the South Munster Development Plate. We were very lucky that the weather held for the entire morning. The Mitchelstown squad on the day was as follows: Jack McGrath, Aaron Hickey, Tommy Long, Jack O’Brien, Brendan O’Donoghue, Stephen O’Flynn, Conor Dooling, Conor Wiley, Josh Kearney, Declan Moriarty, Jack O’Grady, Diarmuid O’Brien, Andrew McEnerney, Leon Fitzharris, Cormac and James Luddy, Robbie O’Sullivan and Billy White.

The match kicked off and as was the case all year we were the smaller side, but as with this bunch of young men that doesn’t bother them in the slightest. Mitchelstown had the better share of possession in the first 10-15 mins of the match. Some strong carries from the forwards gave the backs especially Tommy and Leon the space out wide to eat up the meters out wide. We came within inches of the Cobh try line only to be stopped by some good defence from Pirates.

The first score went to Cobh, as they finally got their hands on the ball and show the speed they have out wide, 0-5 to Cobh. The first half ended with Cobh going down to 14 men as their flanker was sin binned for some foul.

Cobh started the 2nd half much quicker than they did the first as they would race out of the blocks to score their second try to make the score, 0-12. Our lads were frustrated but determined to get back into the game. The things that were working the first half unfortunately were not in the second as the bigger Cobh side were make the most of their size advantage stopping our forwards crossing the gain line. Jack McGrath at out-half made the decision to kick for territory to put the Cobh back three under pressure. This worked well as the pressure from a very good Mitchelstown chase got us back in the game.

Our line-out who have been brilliant in the last few games continued to perform beyond expectations as they managed to win our own lineouts and disrupt the Cobh line-out all game. The game was coming to a close as Mitchelstown pushed for a score that their performance deserved. It would finally come through Jack McGrath going over a try, 5-12 to Cobh. That was the final score and with that our competitive season came to an end.

The support from the parents was brilliant and the tea and coffee and refreshments they provided afterwards was superb as they has done all season. We will be organizing an end of season challenge match, so we will keep everyone updated. I would like to thank Cobh for travelling on the day and everyone in attendance today and who have supported our lads all season. (Courtesy Sean Molloy)

We look forward to welcoming everyone back on September and wish everyone a great summer.
