Under 16 away at Midleton – Report courtesy of Kevin Kelly

Last Sunday we travelled with a very young and inexperienced team to Midleton RFC for a lunchtime kick off against the hosts for our league opener. While we dominated the opening 10 minutes we were unable to convert possession into scores. Midleton then settled into the game and found a number of scores easy to come by. However, we kept fighting and picked up a terrific try on the wing by our out half Darragh Casey just on the stroke of half-time. This passage of play gave our players the confidence to look out wide for opportunities.

On the re-start of the 2nd half our leaders within the team recognised that both stretching the Midleton defence and playing a clever tactical kicking game was the best approach to gain a foothold in the game. With confidence rising we took complete control of the game with our hard and intelligent work resulting in 5 incredible tries from Josh Kearney’s barreling runs to bag himself a hat-trick and Jose Fernandez’ pace on the wing putting him in for a brace.

This is a very young team whose numbers are boosted by 3 recent additions from Spain who are attending a local school for the year. So whilst we ultimately lost the game 57-38 the 2nd half showed this team has more than enough to learn, improve and compete.

Our next game is at home to Cobh Pirates on Saturday 09th Oct
