Mitchelstown Rugby Club

LOTTO JACKPOT €10,400 - 14th November Sunday

Munster Junior League Conference C

Waterford City were to be the challenge on Sunday, but the lack of referee meant that the game could not go ahead.

Terrific win for the boys under 14 rugby

Final score: Mitchelstown 19 : 10 Crosshaven.

On Saturday morning our U14s welcomed Crosshaven to Curraghbowen in our first home game of the season. It was evident from the kick off that both clubs were well up for the match and every meter of ground gained was hard fought.

It was Mitchelstown who drew first blood with our returning Captain Oden van der Werff bobbing and weaving his way through the Crosshaven defence to score following several phases of play, the subsequent conversion was put straight between the posts by our number 8 Colman Fagan. Mitchelstown 7 : 0 Crosshaven. The visitors came back strongly following our try and we sustained attack after attack before Crosshaven eventually forced over their first try. They kicked their conversion wide of the post. Mitchelstown 7 : 5 Crosshaven.

The visitors were now full of confidence and kept pressing for a second try but our lads dug deep and held off wave after wave of attack before Crosshaven again scored to take the lead but their conversion was again wide of the post Mitchelstown 7 : 10 Crosshaven.

Our lads dug deep and began to press forward inch by inch with some great runs by our out half Liam O’Keefe and our right winger Eoghan Noonan before offloading to our inside center Oden van der Werff who turned on his pace to drive over the line for his second try of the match. Colman stepped up to kick the conversion but just kicked wide of the post

Mitchelstown 12 : 10 Crosshaven at halftime.

Our boys were determined at the break and started to believe that the game was theirs for the taking. Our outside center Niall Casey came close to scoring early in the second half but was fouled 5 metres from the line before Crosshaven turned over the ball and began their attack again some big tackles form Gavin Barrett and Sean Hennessy helped to keep us in the game. Crosshaven started to kick some balls over the top in order to gain some ground but our full back Danny Gorry retrieved and went on some weaving runs of his own, and gained back our lost ground. Michael Kenneally showed great strength and determination turning over the ball in his own 22 and running to the Crosshaven 22 all while dragging two players with him, before eventually being taken down by a third. Our star player of the second half Colman Fagan picked up where Michael left off and burst through for his first ever try in the corner, the subsequent conversion looked like it would be almost impossible to score from the angel it was at but Colman flying high from his try stepped up and confidently kicked it with the ball flying just over the crossbar.

Mini Rugby first days out

Saturday saw our U11s and U12s on their first match of the season in Fermoy.  There was great excitement about putting their training to work in a game.  The U11s played two games. Both teams were evenly matched. There were some great tries scored and the lads adapted well playing under the rules at their age group.  The passing, tackling and general play all round was very impressive for so early in the season.  Panel on the day Cathal Meade, Noah Graham, Noah Bernard, Cathal Cleary, John Cleary, Liam Drake, Isaac Keneally, Josh Keane, Luke Walsh, Anthony Flynn, Harry Finn.

U12s also had a very successful day. Though short in numbers there is plenty of experience in the group. We would like to thank Fermoy for ensuring the group got meaningful rugby on the day.  Panel on the day: Eoin Luddy, Jack Darrer-Dalton, Will Howard, Michael Coughlan and Will Howard.

Huge thanks to Fermoy for hosting and all the parents for their support on  the day.

U8s and U10s travelled to Galbally on Sunday morning for a blitz with the hosts and Kilfeacle.  It was a perfect morning for games and it was a great set up in Galbally.  Our 8s played 3 games all non-contact. All were playing their first game and they played so well.  Panel on the day: Saoirse Horgan  Danny O’Keeffe, Eoin O’Donnell, Scott Coughlan, Tiernan Lacey, Jim Drake and Matt Coughlan.

The U10s played two games. This group has a mix of experience and some playing their first game.  There were great tries scored and the whole team got stuck in.  Panel on the day: Aaron Horgan, Sadbh Butler, Caoimhe Butler,  Ryan Kinsella, Thomas Burke, Fionn McLaughlin, Hazel Dooling and Oisin Heaphy.

Thanks to Galbally for hosting and for a lovely spread of food afterwards.
