Munster Junior League – second round
Galbally/Mitchelstown 20 – Cobh Pirates 15.
On a blustery and thoroughly miserable Sunday afternoon, the sides took to the field with trepidation. It was never going to be a day for flowing passes and back movements, but both sides rose to the occasion, and despite a wet south westerly wind, delivered a tough competitive fixture.
The home team took the advantage of the breeze, and took the lead after ten minutes, when extensive pressure was put on the Pirate’s defence and they eventually capitulated to a fine try from Brendan Childs, converted by John Kearns The next twenty minutes was played out between the 22 metre lines, but eventually the visitors equalised on their first visit to the home 22.
That was the final score of the half, and it was all square.
Cobh started brightly in the second period and converted a penalty kick to lead shortly after the start. Worse was to follow for the home side, when an unconverted try put them out of bonus point range. Twenty minutes to go and the boys in red, black, and white put good pressure on the Cobh defence again and scored a good try from Tommie Childs. The game was levelled by a penalty from John Kearns
The Pirates were outflanked by fine forward and back work for the final score, a try by the prolific Davy Sheehan. The contest ended prematurely when a visiting team player was hurt and needed attention from an ambulance crew. Early news on his condition was said to be good. At the time of writing the player was making a full recovery.

Under 16 Mitchelstown boys
Mitchelstown 0 Midleton 10
On Sunday last 09th October we kicked off our season when we hosted Midleton at home in Currabowen. With a strong wind down the middle of the pitch and a constant downpour of rain the weather dictated how this game was to be played. A strong opening 10 minutes resulted in us spending a lot of time in the opposition ’22 and narrowly being denied a score on a number of occasions. Handling was extremely difficult for both sides, but this did not dampen the energy and enthusiasm which the boys played with. We went in at the break 0-5 down but the effort shown in both defence, and attack meant we faced the second half with a lot of focus. Again, the weather dictated this was going to be a forward’s orientated half and we finished in a strong manner playing a lot of time in their half. Our set piece, ruck, ball carrying and defence went very well which gives us a huge platform to build on. The game finished 0-10 but this was a most encouraging performance for a variety of reasons including players gaining valuable experience and those for whom it was a first game ever.
We are always actively recruiting new players so if you know anybody who is interested, we train in Currabowen on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1900 or please contact any club member. Our next fixture is next weekend away to Cobh.
