Mitchelstown Rugby Club

Galbally/Mitchelstown notes

Junior League Section B

Galbally/Mitchelstown 17:  19 Fethard and District

Following on from a comprehensive victory over Fethard in the shield competition, it was easy to assume that a home victory in the junior league was achievable, but that was not the outcome of a hard-fought battle.

The cold south westerly wind numbed the bodies of players and spectators, and with the home side facing the gale in the first half, little progress was made. However, despite the conditions, the Galbally/Mitchelstown defended their line tenaciously, the nett result at half time was a three-penalty lead.

As it frequently does the gale abated somewhat after the break, and the advantage lessened dramatically. The visitors drew first blood with a try after five minutes. ‘Town responded and halved the deficit fifteen minutes later. A fine penalty kick brought the lead down to four points. The Tipperary side retaliated with another try and looked likely to win, but a last brave effort reduced the winning margin to two points, thus securing the bonus point.

We travel to Youghal for a 2:30 start next Sunday, with our sights set on a victory.

Training on Wednesday and Friday as usual at 7:00pm sharp in Galbally. New players are always guaranteed a warm welcome.

Game v Sundays Well:

We recently travelled to Sundays Well for a game against a highly organized and experienced home side. Once again this was played in very heavy wind and rain which dictated how the game was to be played. We were very unlucky to convert a number of chances in the first half after exerting a lot of pressure. Facing into the wind in the second half meant we struggled at times to get out of our own half but finished the game strongly.

Ballincollig 10: Mitchelstown 29

On Friday night last, we travelled to Ballincollig to play under the lights on a perfect evening for rugby. This was a most encouraging performance capped off by a 29-10-win scoring five tries in the process. After sustaining a considerable amount of pressure for the opening 10 minutes we countered with a try from distance. This gave us a lot of confidence to push forward and were held up over the line on two occasions before another well worked try moving the ball the width of the field. While three more tries followed in the second half this was as a result of sharp ruck work, running supporting lines, and our scrum standing up to the most physically powerful unit we’ve faced to date. This game was an all-round whole team & subs performance providing us with a massive confidence boost and gives us a positive platform to build on. Our next game is on Saturday 12th November at home to Dungarvan in Currabowen at 1300.

Under 12 boys

First match of the season for the MRFC under 12 was an away trip to Dunmanway and there was some sunshine. Mitchelstown played well against tough opposition and got through for 7 tries. A great start and more to come. Thanks to Dunmanway for hosting and we look forward to a return trip.

Final score Dunmanway 45: 28 Mitchelstown
