MRFC Nov 30th Weekend Match Reports
Match Reports from Weekend of Nov 30th
U18.5:
ON Saturday last we hosted the amalgamation of Crosshaven/Cork Con in the 2nd round of the South Munster League. This turned out to be a very high quality game despite the horrendous conditions with no quarter asked for or given. Having gone two tried down in quick succession around the 20 min mark we crossed the line when Ben Cooke burrowed through from a 5m tap and go. Soon after Dylan Spillane ran in a brilliant solo effort from distance. Dylan scored his 2nd of the game just after the restart to bring his tally to three in two games. Recently returning from 2 years out with serious injuries everybody in the club is delighted to see him back in action stronger than ever. Our set pieces of scrums and lineouts went exceptionally well and the game went right to the wire however the opposition’s ability to rotate in their sizeable squad meant their fresher legs in heavy going seen them through. This performance against a team in a higher division sets us up nicely as we head into the next phase of the Munster wide competition.
Our next fixture is away to Tralee next weekend, date and time to be confirmed.
U14’s:
Our under 14s squad hosted for a 12pm kick-off on Sunday. For the second game in a row our lads started very fast getting a couple of tries to settle any nerves. Some of the highlights from the first half where we controlled most of the ball, Cathal Meade’s touchline conversations, Aaron Horgan’s kick chase and score, our scrum performing much better then in our previous match thanks to Issac and Zack Wims in the second row who was also playing his first ever game along with Darragh Finn who whenever he got a chance put in strong runs down the wing. By half time Mitchelstown were well ahead and looking good.
The 2nd half was a much tighter contest with several changes to give every lad a good run out, Youghal battled back. All of the lads worked really hard throughout the 2nd half and it was a good defensive effort specially from some of our younger lads stepping up as the half went on, this includes Liam Drake who, despite being one our youngest players, took over as captain for the last part of the game when Issac and Tom Walsh were subbed off. At the ref’s final whistle Mitchelstown emerged decisive winners with a final score of 31-7.
Our Squad on the day was as follows: Tom O’Regan, Josh Keane, Killian O’Grady, Anthony Flynn, Finbar Danne, Liam Drake, Tom Walsh, Dean Slyne, Isaac Keneally, Aaron Horgan, Rory McCarthy, Cathal Meade, Harry Finn, Joe Gallagher, Zack Wims, Darragh Finn, PJ Hogan, Cullain Russell
Thanks for all the support from the parent and club members as always, the refreshments after the game were top notch and always its brilliant to have the lads cheered one from the sideline. Thanks also to Youghal for travelling to us for what was a good game of youth rugby. We will be training every Thursday night at 7pm at Currabowen any new players welcome. Our next match will be away to Muskerry RFC Saturday December 14th.
