MRFC Jan 18th Weekend Match Reports

U18.5:

On Saturday last we hosted Kanturk in the 3rd round of the Munster Bowl competition. This was a very good game between 2 very evenly matched teams which we managed to come out on top in dramatic fashion with a score in the last play of the game deciding it. Kanturk got off the mark first with a try but we responded well with a penalty try being awarded when our scrumhalf was fouled just short of the line after a brilliant intercept run from inside our own half. The second half continued in the same hard-fought manner as the first with Kanturk leading 07-12 going with the clock almost out of time. A superb 20m carry from Divino da Silva set up Eoin Lynch to burst through a number of tacklers to touch down, Dan Turley kept his composure with a well taken conversion to win the game by 2 on a final scoreline of 14-12. This was a galvanising win with the work ethic of every single player putting us in the position to secure the win at the very end.

Our next game is on weekend of 01st Feb away to Waterford City.

U14:

Mitchelstown u14 were at home to Crosshaven on Saturday last 18 January. It was the first game of a busy weekend in Currabowen. Crosshaven had a strong scrum and good passing game. Mitchelstown started strong and continued with very committed team display. Two tries from inside the 22 by Isaac Kenneally got Mitchelstown off to a great start.  Both these converted by Cathal Meade. Tom Walsh secured a third with a blistering line break.  Mitchelstown 19-0 at half time. Crosshaven scored early in the second half. Mitchelstown responded with great try saving tackles by Harry Finn, Josh Keane, Darragh Finn and Zac Whims. A further try was added by Isaac Keneally late in the second half, bringing the ball to the line in one hand.

Final score 24 -5.

U16:

On Sunday our U16s welcomed Shannon to the Bone yard for R3 of the Pan Munster Bowel. With a depleted team due to injury and sickness the boys worked hard from the very start, defending well. The game was quite open with both sides moving the ball well with some good running and support lines. Shannon struck first and went into a 0-14 lead. This didn’t deter the Mitchelstown side who rallied with a superb 50-22 from Jack to give them territory inside the Shannon 22. The resulting maul from the line out gave go forward ball sucking in the Shannon defence who tried to slow the game down but quick ruck ball and great work from our pack ready to take it in edged them into the 5-meter line resulting in a pick and go diving over the try line to get us on the score board and a conversion to make it 7-14. Shannon struck again shortly after to leave the game 7-21 at the break. The 2nd half was a battle but some of the big Shannon runners close to the 5 cost us. Mitchelstown never stopped with big carries and support running helped us gain good field position and to retain possession, the boys kept going to the very end and got over the line again, from the restart it was more of the same and kept driving but time ran out on them to get a 3rd try. Despite the loss it was a massive effort from the team showing good skill and improvement week on week.
