MRFC March 22nd Weekend Match Reports

U18.5

On Sunday last we hosted near neighbours Fermoy in the South Munster Cup. With this being the 3rd time we’ve played this season the teams were very familiar to each other and this showed in what proved to be an extremely close game. The 1st half played was a very physical effort in which both teams failed to score but not from the lack of effort. The 2nd half proved to be a hugely entertaining 35 mins of rugby with Fermoy taking the lead soon after kick-off. We hit back almost immediately with Eoin Lynch driving over after a clever short lineout move paid off nicely. Fermoy regained the lead and we struck back soon after when again Eoin finished off from close range after another lineout variation. We then took the lead with Ben Cooke forcing his way over from a 5m tap and go. All of these tries were brilliantly converted by scrumhalf Dan Turley who also added the final penalty of the game to extend out lead out to the final score of 24-19. This was a hugely rewarding win which was fully deserved and enjoyed by the boys who deserve full credit for how they applied themselves.

U14

Our under 14s squad hosted Ballincollig for a 11:30am kick-off on Saturday in the South Munster B Cup Semi-final. The conditions on Saturday morning made it that the game was going to be played with massive consideration for the strong wind. Both teams looked up for it from the off with a tense battle taking place with some strong defence and discipline being show from both teams. Town tried their best to use the wind in the first half with Cathal Meade and Aaron Horgan putting in some dangerous kicks across the field the bounce of the ball just didn’t go our way. Ballincollig took the lead through a break down the wing, the only slip up our lads made in the first half. We would finally get our deserved try on the stroke of half time through some strong forward with Zach Wims going over for his first ever try for the club and it was converted expertly by Cathal. 7-7 half-time.

The 2nd half continued to be played with the wind as strong as it was in the first. The game started to get very physical from both sides with the benches playing a massive part in the game and fair play to all our subs who all played well and the quality of our play didn’t dip at all even with players playing out of position, a great testament to this team and their training ethic and attendance throughout the season. Unfortunately, late in the game the pressure finally broke and it was Ballincollig who go the winning score 5 mins from the final whistle. Our lad’s heads didn’t drop for one second whether it was Anthony Flynn making a try saving tackle our backs being brave enough to run from their own try line and only for a last gasp tackle they nearly got the break away. The match finished 12-7 to Ballincollig.

Our Squad on the day was as follows: Tom O’Regan, Josh Keane, Killian O’Grady, Finbar Danne, Liam Drake, Aaron Horgan, Cathal Meade, Joe Gallagher, Darragh Finn, Tom Walsh, Evan Holland, Aaron Coleman-Roche, Mark Williams, Oisin Heaphy, Harry Finn, Rory McCarthy, PJ Hogan, Antony Flynn, Zach Wims, Issac Kenneally(c) .

Thanks to Ballincollig for travelling and best of luck in the final, as always thanks to the parents for the support and refreshments and Harry Kinsella who without your tireless work there would be no matches played.
