Weekend Round Up Oct 12th

Galbally-Mitchelstown RFC 39 - 14 Scariff RFC

Sunday, 11 October | Kick-off: 2:30pm

Galbally-Mitchelstown welcomed Scariff RFC for their first home league fixture of the season on Sunday afternoon. With a full squad available for selection, preparations were going smoothly until the warm-up, when Philip Gleeson unfortunately suffered an ankle injury and was ruled out of the match. James Hennebry was drafted onto the bench as a replacement. Thanks, are also extended to all reserve squad players who were available on the day.

The home side started brightly and quickly established dominance through their forward pack, enjoying long periods of possession in the opening stages. The breakthrough came early when rampaging Jack Donovan crossed for the opening try. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 5-0.

Galbally-Mitchelstown continued to apply pressure and were rewarded with a penalty, which was calmly converted from distance by Graham Burke to extend the lead. Sustained pressure eventually led to a second try, with Dan Gleeson breaking through several tackles to touch down. Burke added the extras to put the home side firmly in control.

Scariff responded well and enjoyed a spell of possession, working their way up field to score a converted try and narrow the deficit to 15-7.

The home side soon regained momentum. After a number of well-worked phases, the ball was moved wide where outside centre Michael Mulchrone finished impressively in the corner to bring the score to 20-7. Galbally-Mitchelstown struck again before the interval through Davy Norris, adding another try to take a commanding 25-7 lead into halftime.

Scariff emerged for the second half with renewed energy and capitalised on a period during which the home side were adjusting following a number of substitutions. The visitors worked their way up the field and crossed for a converted try to reduce the gap to 25-14.

To their credit, Galbally-Mitchelstown settled back into the contest and re-established their dominance up front. Strong forward carries and patient phase play eventually created the opening for Davy Norris to power over for another try, extending the lead to 32-14.

The home side were not finished there. Following an excellent defensive effort that turned possession over in their own half, Dan Gleeson once again showed his pace and determination, evading several defenders before racing under the posts for his second try of the afternoon. Graham Burke converted to complete the scoring and secure an impressive 39-14 victory.

A special mention goes to Jack Norris, who was named Man of the Match for an outstanding all-round performance.

Overall, it was an excellent team display and a very encouraging result in Galbally-Mitchelstown's first home league game of the season. Congratulations to all involved.

Cobh Pirates 19–21 Mitchelstown/Galbally U16’s

Our lads made the daunting trip to Cobh on Saturday to face the Pirates in what, on paper, looked like their toughest challenge of the season so far.

Mtown/Galbally opted to play for territory early on, allowing Cobh most of the possession, but excellent defending kept the home side from breaching our try line.

Once the lads settled, some good handling and patient phase play provided the platform for Micheal Davern to crash over for the opening try. Cathal Meade added the extras to give us a 7–0 lead after 15 minutes.

Cobh were rewarded for their efforts five minutes later when a well-worked lineout move created space for them to cross for an unconverted try. However, Brian Walsh would have the final say of the half. A strong break down the wing, followed by a pass back inside, allowed Brian to glide past the last defender and touch down. Cathal’s conversion sent Mtown/Galbally into the break with a 14–5 lead.

Cobh again started the second half the brighter of the two sides, but this time they were much more clinical. Two converted tries inside the opening ten minutes saw them regain the lead at 19–14 and put our lads under real pressure.

Mtown/Galbally regrouped and returned to the territory game that had served them well in the first half. Crucial adjustments in defence also closed the spaces Cobh had begun to exploit.

That renewed composure was rewarded with ten minutes remaining when Brian powered his way past a number of defenders to dive over for his second try of the afternoon. Cathal maintained his perfect record from the tee, restoring our lead at 21–19 and setting up a tense finish.

Trojan work at the scrum, lineout, and breakdown, backed up by a determined defensive effort, saw the lads keep Cobh scoreless for the remainder of the game and secure a hard-earned victory.

A fantastic win built on teamwork, composure, and character. The lads now sit top of both leagues with two wins from two in each—a brilliant start to the season. Well done, lads!
